Discontinuation of Cambridge IGCSE accreditation

The accreditation process for Cambridge IGCSE coursework and speaking test assessors has now been discontinued. The last exam series where accreditation was required was the November 2015 series.

Why have you discontinued the accreditation process for Cambridge IGCSE coursework and speaking tests?

We want to ensure that all teachers involved in the marking of internally assessed components can access and benefit from the training materials provided by Cambridge. Therefore, to widen access to our training materials, we have discontinued the accreditation process for Cambridge IGCSE coursework and speaking test assessors. This removes the pressure of the deadline, any associated stress, and the administrative burden on schools.

What training materials are available to teachers assessing Cambridge IGCSE coursework and speaking tests?

Coursework and Speaking Test Handbooks

Our Coursework and Speaking Test Handbooks provide guidance, advice and demonstrations of how to mark internally assessed components using real candidate evidence. They are available to download for free from Teacher Support.

The handbooks for the following syllabuses are too large for teachers to download from the site:

  • Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457)
  • Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design (0400)
  • Cambridge IGCSE Design & Technology (0445).

You need to order these handbooks through the Cambridge Publications Catalogue. These will carry a small fee for production of £29.15.

Coursework Training Programmes

Interactive online courses for 26 Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses are now available from our Professional Development and Training website.

The courses give teachers the opportunity to practise their skills within an engaging, supportive and accessible environment. They use real coursework examples and participants receive moderator feedback.

The courses are divided up into individual modules related to different aspects of the coursework marking process (introduction, task setting, script marking and commenting). Each module follows a structure that will provide the teacher with:

  • a set of learning objectives that will be followed through within the module activities
  • a brief introduction to each aspect of the coursework marking process
  • an introduction from the moderator focusing on particular aspects and nuances in the coursework marking process as appropriate
  • an activity that allows the teacher to practise and self-assess their skills in coursework marking
  • a test that assesses the teacher’s ability to mark coursework to Cambridge standards.

Teachers who complete all modules successfully pass the course and are presented with a certificate of participation.

These courses are optional. Each course costs £50 and teachers will have a 30 day access period to complete it.

Why did I go through the accreditation process for exams series in 2015 if the process has been discontinued in 2016?

Although accreditation is no longer a requirement in 2016, accredited teachers will have benefited from the training materials and feedback report provided as part of the accreditation process. The accreditation fee was moderate and the personal feedback from Cambridge is no longer available now that the process has been discontinued.

Will standards drop if teachers no longer need to be accredited by Cambridge to assess Cambridge IGCSE coursework and speaking tests?

No. We have discontinued the accreditation process in the interest of standards. We want to ensure that all teachers involved in the marking of internally assessed components can access and benefit from the training materials provided by Cambridge.

Guidance on the delivery and assessment of Cambridge coursework and speaking tests is still available in the Coursework and Speaking Test Handbooks on Teacher Support. Access to these support materials at any time of year will allow all teaching staff to align their teaching accurately to the assessment criteria throughout the delivery of the course. This approach will be more effective than the accreditation of a single internal moderator in each Centre who quality assures all marking at the end of the Cambridge IGCSE course.

The handbooks for the following syllabuses are too large for teachers to download from Teacher Support and are only available on CD:

  • Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457)
  • Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design (0400)

You need to order these handbooks through the Cambridge Publications Catalogue. These will carry a small fee for production of £29.15.

In addition to the handbooks, interactive online Coursework Training Programmes are available for 26 Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses from our Professional Development and Training website. These courses are optional and give teachers the opportunity to practise their skills within an engaging, supportive and accessible environment. Each course costs £50 and teachers will have a 30 day access period to complete it.
