Currently there is no official penalty for IGCSE Geography coursework that goes over the 2000 world limit. This figure is given as a guide but Cambridge may need to revisit this for future series if a number of schools submit substantially over length coursework.
Candidates should be discouraged from submitting considerably over length coursework. The generic coursework mark scheme in the syllabus states under the "Organisation and presentation" section that to achieve Level 3 (9-12 marks) "a coherent presentation using a range of appropriate techniques with accuracy and clear relevance to the aims". A significantly over length piece of coursework may lose focus and relevance on the route to geographical enquiry.
